Player Interview
By: Sachi

Former newsletter editor Kaus Debonair takes his turn on the hot seat this month!

Name: Kaus Debonair
Age: 23
Location: Chicago, IL, USA
Hobbies: Tennis, golf, Devas, writing for the newsletter. ;)
Shoe Size: 11

Sachi: So Kausie, you used to be Editor and now that has been passed on to Shuriken, how do you feel letting someone else run this project?
Kaus: It's alright, I guess. If I had the time to dedicate to it, I'd still be running it. The only hard part would be when I see somebody doing it differently than I did. The only critiquing that I can really make is that I still wish it was monthly. It's hard to have material every month, but it sure seems like a long time in between editions.

Sachi: Aside from the Occult fan writing, what else do you bring to this community?
Kaus: Well, I used to be halfway decent at TTA. I still play in chat tournaments and official tournaments regularly. When I bring my game, I can still do pretty well. Other than that, I'm a pretty charismatic chatter when I'm around. TTA Chat can be fun when the tumbleweed goes away every once in awhile.

Sachi: Clan leading sound complicated, what clans (both past and present) have you had a hand in creating?
Kaus: I refounded the Zodiac Braves here in 2004 or so and founded the Devas in 2005 and have been leading it ever since. Both are still doing well so it's gratifying that something I helped make is still here. Complicated might not be the best word, though. While leading and maintain clans can be challenging at times, building an excellent support network makes it very easy and I've been fortunate to have one in both projects.

Sachi: What do you think about the serge in new clans being created? Which of them do you think actually have a good chance of success?
Kaus: Of the newer clans, I'm really impressed with the Elites. They seem to be a good group of young players that all seem to care about the game and making their clan better. It seems that clans can get overfilled with the veterans that bring their presence, but not much of the abilities that they once had for various reasons. I just hope they can sustain themselves because it is nice to see something different on the clan scene than the usual suspects.

Sachi: Seeing as you personally had your hand involved in two major clans (Devas and Zodiac Braves) what advice can you give to anyone who is thinking of starting a clan?
Kaus: I'll give two quick tips. First, build up some experience with clans before you try your own. I was a member of multiple clans before I started my own. And even then, it was a struggle at first because I wasn't the most well-known player. Secondly, don't start it yourself. I started the Zodiac Braves and Devas with multiple people. Build on the charisma of the team and it will all grow from there.

Sachi: Pick three words that sums up Devas.
Kaus: Activity, Fun, Experience.

Sachi: What are some positive things about leading a clan? Negative ones?
Kaus: The most positive thing I can take from it is that I'm not just another player on this site. Leading a clan, and a successful one at that, puts me into a very select group of well-respected players on this site. Players from your own clan as well as others look up to the leader at times for what they have done. The most negative thing would have to be dealing with the down times. It is unrealistic to think that a clan can be so great all the time. Lapses in activity, losses in tournaments, and general downtimes of the clan is something that the leader has to deal with and help the clan recover from if they want to be successful again. It also has the makings of being a thankless job from time to time. It can be hard for regular players to appreciate how hard clan leaders work to make clans successful.

Sachi: What about this Elysian Fields project being resurrected, what are your thoughts on that?
Kaus: I don't quite understand the purpose of it. The concept as I understand is to create an alternative clan scene. But the current clan scene is sparse at best with only a couple of solid clans. Instead of creating a new clan scene, how about we fix the current one?

Sachi: What are your thoughts on the tournament situation with the amount of games not being played? Do you think its lack of inpsiration or too much tournaments running?
Kaus: It doesn't seem like there are more tournaments than there used to be. I think that with the activity in the community gradually dropping, it is having its effect on the tournaments.

Sachi: What about Clan inactivity, what are your thoughts on that?
Kaus: Sounds like clan leaders need to whip their clans into shape. :p

Sachi: How long have you been kicking around here on TTA for?
Kaus: However long TTA has been on the internet. :p

Sachi: What brought you here in the first place?
Kaus: Same as all the other older players. I was on TTX and naturally made the move over here when that all fizzled out.

Sachi: You must have seen some neat things in your day, what would you say was the most interesting thing that you seen on any Triple Triad site?
Kaus: For the lack of a better event, I guess I would find most interesting just how rare the rare cards still are on this site. Back on TTX, rares were common. Everybody had all the rares, and plenty of dupes I might add. After 5+ years on TTA, the scarcity of rares still exists. Nice going there, Balz. :D

Sachi: What made you come back after being one of the most hated guys on TTA? (Guest Question asked by h0m3r)
Kaus: I was hated? ;) My friends on here stood by me through the whole thing. And besides, it's the internet, people. Can't take things too seriously or life is really going to bite you in the ass. TTA is a fun site so who cares what happened back then.

Sachi: Well, what would you say is the most fondest moment on TTA?
Kaus: Winning TTA's first official tournament. Everybody thought I was the best player on the site. How wrong you all were!

Sachi: What are your thoughts on all these new kids joining up?
Kaus: Great to see some new players, but it would be nice to see some calmer new players. Too much energy even for me at times. :p

Sachi: What is the inspiration behind your nickname?
Kaus: Kaus Debonair is the best character in Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen. Tough as nails boss and just as tough when he joins your party, unlike all those other games where these really tough bosses that join your party suck after the fact. :p

Sachi: The whole reason most of us are here is video games, what would you say is your favorite?
Kaus: I'm a huge fan of the FF and Suikoden series. It's probably a tie between Final Fantasy Tactics and Suikoden 2.

Sachi: Where can we find you during the day? Work/school/etc.?
Kaus: Done with school so not there. :p I work for Budweiser M-F, play golf on Saturday, and am usually here on Sunday's. There's your best chance to find me.

Sachi: Finally, favorite song of the moment?
Kaus: All these new songs on the radio suck, so I'll go with an older one. Name by Goo Goo Dolls.

P.S. what makes you so sexy? (Second part asked by h0m3r)
Kaus: I'm just that good looking. The Metrosexual clan has nothing on me. ;)
